July 4th Weekend Redux #3: Russell’s Crappy Bike Ride

Russell Jobs eats, sleeps, breathes and lives all things bicycle.  From track racing to fun rides to mountain bike racing, Russell does more bike rides of different kinds in a week than anyone I know. And he manages to find time to throw great events like this year’s 10th annual “Crappy Bike Ride.”  The ride begins with a huge cook out in his back yard.  This year about 70 people rode their crappy to cool bicycles over to Russell’s house in East Wauwatosa.  After the BBQ, everyone rides en mass over to the West Allis fireworks, which are held at the Milwaukee Mile race track in State Fair Park.  We all lock up our bikes in a big pile using about 80 ft of cable and one lock.  Then we sit at the top of the grand stands, drink some PBR, listen to the high school band, and the Mayor says a few words before the explosions begin.  This year Mayor Dan Devine gave Russell’s 70 “Cruddy” bike riders a shout out in his speech.  After the fireworks end, people bike over to Gille’s Frozen Custard, a Milwaukee tradition.

Russell leads the pack pulling my Burley with a cooler full of the good stuff.

Sarah scoots off on a classic Moulton.

PBR me 'Lil Gypsy.

Ain't that America

Where was my bike again?

Old is new again: solar powered lights on a vintage tandem

Can't you guys read the sign?

All good things must end, at a frozen custard stand that is.

That pile of bikes locked up at the racetrack is outstanding. Great photography as usual, Dave.

I hope you post about the Tour de Fat. We saw your bike many times that day, but never actually found you in your parade officiator couture.

Nice shot of Syd behind the flag! We had a blast even if Syd did later suffer a bit of road rash after some exuberant racing down a hill with some of the guys. She said it was the nest time she had all weekend! We will be back next year.

  3. Hi Dave,
Your pictures are awesome! If you have any other pictures of John and I on the tandem please let me know. Can I copy the one on your blog to use as my facebook profile picture?

    Thanks,
    Bonnie

Can you give some more details on the 2011 Crappy Bike Ride?? Looks like a lot of fun!
